Host Site Partner Position Section Guidance

Instructions:

  • In this section of the application, you will need to enter at least one position in order to save.
  • A position entry for this section should represent a unique combination of position and work site. For instance, if you would like Program Managers serving at two work sites located at different addresses, distinct entries are needed for the Project Manager(s) serving at Address #1 and the Project Manager(s) serving at Address #2.
  • As position needs at your organization evolve in the coming months, DSCI will provide a mechanism for you to modify and/or add additional positions.
  • Please note that all position entries will be reviewed and approved by DSCI staff. DSCI may accept your organization as a Host Site Partner contingent upon your modification of a position description.

Tips for answering questions in the Position section:

  1. What do you anticipate these Service Year Option or Maryland Corps Members doing at your organization? Please describe typical job tasks and projects they will work on.
    • General Guidance: In this question, we are hoping to gain insight into the critical components of the roles and responsibilities that Members will take on at your organization. Explaining what their day-to-day schedule could look like, presenting your ideas for projects the Members might work on, or describing specifically how these Members will be put to work at your organization are all helpful avenues.
    • Sample Answer: The Maryland Corps/Service Year Option Members at our organization will engage in a variety of tasks, including community outreach, program coordination, and hands-on project implementation. On a daily basis, Members can expect to be present at our daily 9am team meetings, as well as our 4:30pm wrap-up calls. Additionally, Members should be prepared to engage Members of the community via email, telephone, and in-person. Members should also expect to be given some authority, especially as it relates to program coordination and administration, as they may be called upon to run a session. Finally, Members can expect to be off-site some days (transportation provided) when we are visiting our partners in the community.
  2. What kind of position-specific on the job training will you provide these Members?
    • General Guidance: For this question, we are specifically interested in your organization’s ability and willingness to train our Members to excel at the tasks they are assigned. One of the many goals of the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option programs is to equip Members with the tools they need to succeed both during their term of service, and long after that as well.
    • Sample Answer: Upon starting work at our organization, Members will go through a 2-day orientation during which they learn about the organization as a whole, the different departments within the organization, and also the main duties of their role. Members will be introduced to key supervisors across the organization, as well as their own supervisor who will act as their main point person and mentor throughout their term of service. Our on-the-job training aligns with the duties and responsibilities of each Member. For our program administrators, for example, they will have the opportunity to shadow some of our more seasoned program administrators to gain a better understanding of what goes into making a program, from its inception to its implementation. We will also offer training to Members that assists them in navigating some of our internal systems, like Google Suites where we keep track of our documents, and Slack where we communicate with one another.
  3. What is your ideal candidate for this position? Please keep in mind that this will be the first work experience for many of our Members. If there are specific skills or experience requirements needed for this position, please describe them here.
    • General Guidance: In this question, it is most helpful for us if you describe to us your idea of a candidate that is both strong and realistic. As stated in the question, please remember that for many of our Members this may be their first work experience. With that in mind, while it is acceptable to ask for qualifications such as 2+ years of experience, particular certifications, or even licenses, it is likely most practical to name work-related attributes that you seek in a Member; for example, hard-working, timely, strong interpersonal skills, etc.
    • Sample Answer: The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is outgoing, warm, creative, and self-motivated. As a program coordinator, we need someone who is willing and able to engage with our clientele to make them feel welcome and listened to. Additionally, since we are always trying to come up with new ways to engage our clientele, it is important that the Member is creative and is able to think outside of the box. Finally, since it can sometimes take weeks or even months to bring a program to fruition, we need someone who is driven, and is able to see how small tasks contribute to the bigger picture, even if the deliverable is farther down the road.

Position Descriptions:

The options in the Position field of the application reflect some of the most common positions that our Host Site Partners offered to Members in the first year of our programs. As a reminder, these positions do not reflect prior experience that Members have in these areas (many of our Members have not held full-time jobs before), but rather positions that our Members are looking to develop their skills in over the course of the service term. The below descriptions are meant to serve as a guide for how Members may fit within your organization, but it is also acceptable to specify a different position with the Other option.
