Host Site Partner Position Section Guidance

Instructions:

  • In this section of the application, you will need to enter at least one position in order to save your work. Note: the initial Host Site Partner application will require you to submit at least one position.
  • A position entry for this section should represent the exact  combination of position and work site. For instance, if you would like Project Managers serving at two work sites located at different addresses, distinct entries are needed for the Project Manager(s) serving at Address #1 and the Project Manager(s) serving at Address #2.
  • As position needs at your organization evolve in the coming months, DSCI will provide a mechanism for you to modify and/or add additional positions.
  • Once approved, the information entered in this Position Posting is what will be displayed to Member applicants during the matching process. To that end, please be as descriptive as possible so that potential candidates understand the position better.

Tips for answering questions in the Position section:

  1. What do you anticipate Maryland Corps/Service Year Option Members will be doing at your organization? Please describe the service that Members will do to address the social needs of the community, and typical job tasks and projects they will work on.
    • General Guidance: In this question, we are hoping to gain insight into the critical components of the roles and responsibilities that Members will take on at your organization. Explaining what their day-to-day schedule could look like, presenting your ideas for projects the Members might work on, or describing specifically how these Members will be put to work at your organization are all helpful avenues.
    • Outreach Specialist Example: Members will serve as vital community connectors, implementing creative outreach strategies to build meaningful relationships with local residents and organizations. They’ll manage social media campaigns, organize community events, create engaging content for newsletters and fliers, conduct presentations at schools and community centers, and maintain databases of community contacts. Members will be instrumental in spreading awareness about our programs and services while ensuring our message reaches those who need it most.
    • Youth Activity Coordinator Example: Members will play an essential role in shaping young minds through engaging educational programming. They’ll plan and lead daily activities, homework assistance sessions, and enrichment programs for youth. Members will create lesson plans, organize field trips, facilitate group discussions, provide one-on-one mentoring, and track student progress. They’ll also collaborate with teachers and parents to ensure that activities align with educational goals and support youth development.
Help Desk Tier 1 Example: Members will provide initial technical support, responding to user inquiries and troubleshooting common issues related to hardware, software, and connectivity. They will document reported problems, resolve basic technical issues, and escalate complex problems to higher-tier support when necessary. Members may also assist with equipment setup, software updates, and basic IT maintenance. By addressing these technical needs, they will ensure smooth operations and help bridge the gap between technology and user experience.
    • Office Operations Example: Members will assist in overseeing daily office operations, managing tasks such as scheduling, maintaining records, coordinating office supplies, and supporting team members with administrative needs. They will help streamline processes, improve organization efficiency, and provide logistical support for events and meetings. Projects may include updating filing systems, creating organizational tools, and managing internal communications, all of which directly contribute to the office’s smooth functionality and ability to serve the community effectively.
  2. What kind of position-specific on the job training will you provide for these Members and what level of independence will you expect of the members?
    • General Guidance: For this question, we are specifically interested in your organization’s ability and willingness to train our Members to excel at the tasks they are assigned. One of the many goals of the Maryland Corps/Service Year Option programs is to equip Members with the tools they need to succeed both during their term of service, and long after that as well.
    • Outreach Specialist Example: Members will receive comprehensive training in community engagement strategies, public speaking, social media management, and cultural competency. Initial training includes shadowing experienced staff and participating in workshops. As Members build confidence and skills, they’ll gradually take ownership of projects while having regular check-ins with their supervisors. By month 3-4, Members should be comfortable leading outreach events independently while maintaining open communication with their team.
    • Office Operations Example: Members will receive hands-on training in office management software, such as Microsoft Office Suite and scheduling tools, as well as guidance in organizational procedures, time management, and professional communication. They will shadow experienced staff initially and gradually take on more independent tasks as they gain confidence and competence. Regular check-ins and mentoring will ensure Members feel supported and can ask questions.
    • Help Desk Tier 1 Example: Members will be trained in common troubleshooting procedures, ticketing systems, and communication protocols. Training will cover the use of diagnostic tools, basic IT security practices, and customer service techniques. Initially, Members will work closely with experienced technicians to build confidence and develop their skills. Over time, they will handle routine tasks independently, relying on established guidelines and escalating more complex issues when needed. Regular feedback and mentoring will ensure they grow in their role.
    • Youth Activity Coordinator Example: Members will receive structured training and youth development, classroom management, and curriculum planning. We provide extensive shadowing opportunities with experienced educators and ongoing mentorship. Members will start by co-leading activities and gradually transition to independent facilitation. Regular feedback sessions and professional development will ensure continuous growth while maintaining a supportive learning environment.
  3. What is your ideal candidate for this position? Please keep in mind that this will be the first work experience for many of our Members, and Members will often require extensive instruction and support to succeed at your organization. If there are specific skills or experience requirements needed for this position, please describe them here.
    • General Guidance: In this question, it is most helpful for us if you describe to us your idea of a candidate that is both strong and realistic. As stated in the question, please remember that for many of our Members this may be their first work experience. With that in mind, while it is acceptable to ask for qualifications such as 2+ years of experience, particular certifications, or even licenses, it is likely most practical to name work-related attributes that you seek in a Member; for example, hard-working, timely, strong interpersonal skills, etc.
    • Outreach Specialist Example: Our ideal candidate is an enthusiastic people-person with strong communication skills and a passion for community service. While previous outreach experience is welcome, we value candidates who demonstrate genuine interest in connecting with diverse communities, creativity in problem-solving, and willingness to learn. Basic computer skills are helpful, but most importantly, we seek individuals who are organized, reliable, and eager to develop professional skills in a supportive environment.
    • Office Operations Example: The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and eager to learn. They should have basic computer skills, a willingness to engage in training, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team setting. No prior experience is necessary, but strong communication skills and a proactive attitude are highly desirable. This role is an excellent fit for someone who wants to develop administrative and organizational skills while contributing meaningfully to the organization’s operations.
    • Help Desk Tier 1 Example: The ideal candidate is patient and customer-focused, with an eagerness to learn. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to think critically and solve problems. No prior technical experience is required, but candidates should have a genuine interest in technology and helping others. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys problem-solving and is looking to develop technical and interpersonal skills in a supportive environment.
    • Youth Activity Coordinator Example: We are seeking individuals who are patient, empathetic, and passionate about youth development. Prior experience working with children is beneficial, but not required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate reliability, emotional maturity, and enthusiasm for learning. Basic organizational skills and the ability to maintain appropriate boundaries are essential. Most importantly, we want someone who brings positive energy and is committed to making a difference in the lives of young people.
